How the two income tests work
Most Utah households must pass two income tests.
Gross income test
Gross income is all the money your household gets before taxes and deductions. For most households, it must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. The table above shows those limits.
Deductions do not help here. If your gross income is over the limit, deductions will not change that.
Net income test
Net income is what is left after allowed deductions. It must be at or below 100% of the poverty level. Utah’s Department of Workforce Services (DWS) applies the deductions for you.
Who only needs the net test
If anyone in your home is 60 or older, you only need to pass the net test. The same goes for households with someone who gets certain disability payments.
Some households skip both tests. That includes homes where everyone already gets Family Employment Program (FEP), SSI or General Assistance.

Maximum SNAP benefit in Utah
Your benefit is the maximum for your household size, minus 30% of your net income. Households of one or two people get at least $25.
| Household size | Maximum monthly benefit |
|---|---|
| 1 | $306 |
| 2 | $562 |
| 3 | $808 |
| 4 | $1,023 |
| 5 | $1,217 |
| 6 | $1,463 |
| 7 | $1,616 |
| 8 | $1,841 |
| Each extra person | +$225 |
Your real amount depends on your net income. Use our Utah SNAP calculator for an estimate. You can also see the average SNAP benefit.
Deductions that lower your net income
Deductions subtract certain costs from your income. A lower net income means a higher benefit.
- Earnings: 20% of your pay before taxes.
- Standard deduction: $217 for 1 to 3 people, $229 for 4, $268 for 5, and $308 for 6 or more.
- Housing costs: part of your rent or mortgage and utilities, up to $769 a month. The cap does not apply if someone is 60 or older or disabled.
- Child support you pay.
- Medical costs for people 60 or older or disabled. See our medical expense deduction guide.
- Homeless shelter deduction: a flat $205.66. See the homeless shelter deduction guide.
Keep rent, utility, child care and medical bills handy when you apply.
Utah SNAP asset limits
Assets are money you can use, such as cash and bank balances.
- Most households: $3,000
- Someone 60 or older, or disabled: $4,750
USDA raised the higher limit from $4,500 on October 1, 2026. Utah DWS still lists $4,500 on its site. Ask DWS which amount applies to you. Read more about the 2027 asset limit for seniors and disabled households.
Your car usually does not count. A single lottery or gambling prize of $4,500 or more ends your SNAP. You must drop below the asset limit to qualify again.
Example: how a family of four is calculated
This is an estimate. Say a family of four earns $3,200 a month. They pay $1,500 for housing.
- Gross test: $3,200 is under $3,575. They pass.
- Standard deductions: take off 20% of pay ($640) and the $229 standard deduction. That leaves $2,331.
- Housing deduction: half of $2,331 is $1,165.50. Housing costs above that, $334.50, are deducted.
- Net test: $2,331 minus $334.50 is $1,996.50. That is under $2,750. They pass.
- Benefit: $1,023 minus 30% of $1,996.50 is about $424 a month.
Your costs and deductions will differ. Try the Utah SNAP calculator with your own numbers.
What if your income is over the limit?
A small gap does not always mean a no. Check these first:
- Household size. Everyone who buys and cooks food together counts as one household.
- Your current income. If your pay dropped, apply with your new income.
- The gross test. Deductions only help with the net test, so the gross limit is firm for most households.
- Age and disability. A member who is 60 or older or disabled changes which tests apply.
Only a DWS eligibility specialist can tell you for sure. If you are close, apply and let DWS decide.
Some states raise the gross limit to 200% of poverty. This is called broad-based categorical eligibility (BBCE). Utah is not on USDA’s list of BBCE states. Utah DWS says most households must stay at or below 130%.
